Treatment / Management of Cerebral Palsy

Treatment and Care for a child with cerebral Palsy are a long term process. It is aimed at ensuring the child and their family the best possible quality of life. A multimodal / integrated approach includes comprehensive re-habilitation, specialist medical care as well as psycho-social support. The aim of treatment for children with CP, regardless of causes, is to lead them towards the greatest degree of independence possible, and so to prepare them for as normal an adolescent and adult life as can be achieved. This is the aim of all treatments. The current treatment of cerebral palsy is also directed at repair of the injured brain and management of the impairments and disabilities resulting from developmental brain injury. Currently, there are no single or clinically approved interventions that can successfully repair the existing damage to the brain areas that control muscle coordination and movement. Management options include physiotherapy, occupational, speech therapy, orthotics, device-assisted modalities, pharmacological (Medicinal) intervention, and orthopedic and neurosurgical procedures. It involves establishing a total management program for the child in which a specialized habilitation therapy forms an essential part.

ICD’s treatment system comprises of
  • Habilitation /Rehabilitation Services: Based on neuroplasticity and motor learning (Developmental Rule). Infant Stimulation, Early intervention, Developmental / Functional therapy, Physiotherapy NDT, Vojta, etc), Occupational therapy (BIMT / CIMT, SIT, etc), Speech therapy, Cognitive therapy, Behavior therapy, Assistive technology(  Casting, Orthoses, Mobility Aids, Postural Aids, Assistive aids, Adaptive aids, Hearing Aids, Visual Aids, Computer oriented assistive aids, Robotic aids, etc), Electrotherapy, Hydrotherapy, Hippo therapy, etc

It is always advisable to visit a centre / hospital where there is a competent team of professionals available. It is not necessary that all the experts should be under one roof but there should be very good coordination between the professionals and one of the professionals should be the team leader or key worker. Generally Developmental Pediatricians / Developmental Specialists/ Developmental therapists are considered better team leader / coordinator as they are specially trained in Developmental Disability Management (Cerebral Palsy and Allied Disorders).
