Cerebral Palsy is defined as a disorder of movement and posture that is a result of a non - progressive abnormality of the immature brain. However, this definition hides the complexity of the disorder and its tendency to change over time. Furthermore, despite advances in modern medicine, there is little evidence that the prevalence of this disorder is decreasing. The needs for care of children with cerebral palsy are likely to remain unchanged for the foreseeable future.

It was recognized many years ago that the complexity of cerebral palsy warranted a team approach to care. The institute provided financial resources to support childhood disability services that included multidisciplinary clinic for children with cerebral palsy. One such institute was set up in New Delhi. Since its inception, this idea of a team approach has evolved into a programme that forms the basis of the training courses.

Course Aims
The courses are designed to:
1. Give an overview of the current theoretical background to the multimodal developmental approach to the treatment of the child with Cerebral palsy, through the study of neuroscience, identification, classification principles of assessment and treatment.
2. Provide initial practical and clinical experience in the handling, assessment and management of children with Cerebral palsy.
3. Develop awareness of factors involved in problem solving and communication in all aspects of the treatment context, including the child, the parents, the therapists, and health and education teams.

Course Objectives
To enable the professionals to:
Discuss current knowledge of neuro-anatomy, neurophysiology and neuropathology and relate this to children with Cerebral palsy.
Apply the principle of normal and abnormal development to the management of children with Cerebral palsy.
Apply an understanding of sensory motor development and abnormal movement to the treatment of children with Cerebral palsy.
Identify features of different type of Cerebral palsy and classify children with Cerebral palsy.
Develop skills in assessment and analysis of problems of children with Cerebral palsy.
Develop skills in effective application of handling techniques.
Plan rational and integrate programme of management and develop skills of analytical clinical decision making.
Design home programme, educate and instruct careers.
Lectures and demonstrations of treatment are all given by members of the professional staff and the opportunity given to treat patient under supervision.
